The one where Donna hooks up with Michael Holt, aka Mr. Terrific II. *pauses for Smitty and Nika's howls of rage/disgust to die down* I know, I know. As written by Geoff Johns, Michael is the bestest and the fastest and the most wonderfullest at everything. He's as good a detective as Sand and as good a brawler as Hawkman and as good as--maybe better!--a doctor as Dr. Mid-Nite II. And we hates that, precious. But it wasn't that way when he first showed up, he didn't have to end up that way, and I remain convinced there's a decent character who's been buried under an avalanche of unearned writerly adoration. (Where's your rant on him, Smitty? I'd like to link to it.) Take him back to his roots and you have a very, very smart man who suffered a terrible loss, and thereafter dedicated himself to bringing a little justice into the world. A little fair play, even. They'd meet at some JSA/Titans team-up event, fate of the world at stake, you know the drill. If I'd actually written the fic, I'd probably have skipped the whole thing and picked up at the cleanup/aftermath because actually writing the team-up part would require plot and horrorz, no! But someone more inclined to write plot/action-y things could write it. SHOULD. Because-- Because oh, man, we've seen JSA/JLA and JLA/Titans but there is a vast untapped well of interaction between the members of the JSA and the Titans, the first superhero team and the no-longer-kids who grew up in the life. I'd want to see the early Grayson/Faerber group for the Titans: Nightwing, Arsenal, Troia, Tempest, Flash, Jesse Quick, Cyborg, Starfire, Argent, Damage, and Changeling, dammit, because Gar is a Titan and fic doesn't have no stinkin' 10-member-limit. The usual suspects for the JSA: Sentinel, Flash, Fate, Hawkman, Wildcat, Power Girl, Atom-Smasher, Sand, Hawkgirl, Stargirl, Terrific, Mid- Nite, and others as desired. But it's all about the connections, see. Like: * Jesse and Grant's direct ties to the JSA; * Roy's connection to Dinah; * Donna as the daughter of Hippolyta; and * Wally and Jay's friendship. Hell, the Titans are more connected to the JSA than the JLA ever was. Plus, dude! What I wouldn't give to see the JSA (particularly Alan and Carter) acknowledging Nightwing's leadership abilities, ala Obsidian Age. THAT part of OA was dead-on. What I want to see even more than that? Nightwing and Sand doing the tandem "trained by the world's greatest detectives" thing, with their very different styles. A plotty fic. A long plotty mystery fic YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO WRITE IT. *terrible whirling eyes* Anyone, Bueller? *sigh* ANYWAY. All of this is really irrelevant because a) I'm not writing any of this and b) it was all *handwave* setup to get Donna and Michael in the same place at the same time. And again, I had no plot or story for this, but the following random thoughts: * They've both lost spouses to mundane circumstances. Children, too, if we accept Johns' belated reveal of Paula's pregnancy. * Donna dated Roy and Kyle; she married Terry. That said a lot to me about what she was looking for in a longterm partner: stability and maturity. (Terry turned into a whiny jerk later, but when he first showed up? He was cool.) * The idea of Donna having to work at a relationship for a change. Terry worshiped her, as did Roy and Kyle. She'd be competing with his memories of Paula, he doesn't have all those "perfect-Donna" preconceptions or know anything about her career. It'd be new territory for her. A challenge. She could use one. * I like the imagery. ...no, for true. The real reason for writing this story would have been to see Smitty and Nika's heads explode. So it's probably a good thing I'm not writing it, neh?
